How To Avoid The 3PM Slump

Do you experience the 3PM slump, when our energy dips and we feel like we can’t keep going. This cycle can be very frustrating and counterproductive. Do you ever feel like you’ve hit a wall in the afternoon and can’t seem to get going again? You’re not alone. According to some studies, around 75% of people experience a lull in energy at around 3PM. The “3PM crash” can be caused by a variety of factors, including low blood sugar, dehydration, and stress. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can use to help avoid it. Here are some tips that might work for you.

  1. Eat a balanced breakfast and lunch

Balance your carbs, protein, and fats at every meal to stabilize blood sugar and energy.

  1. Stay hydrated

We need to drink lots of water and stay hydrated.  My favorite way to determine how much water we need is half your body weight in ounces of water daily.              Example:  150 lbs = 75 oz water

  1. Avoid sugar throughout the day

Replace sugar and processed foods for fresh fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, or protein balls.

  1. Go for a walk

Short periods of physical activity are more effective in giving an energy boost than caffeine.  I recommend to clients who are at a desk to get up and walk around the block or house 5 minutes every hour.  This is good for your brain, spine and muscles.

  1. Listen to music

Yep, something as simple as this can help wake you up a bit more! Research has shown that music can help increase your concentration levels. Carson Tate, author of Work Simply: Embracing the Power of Your Personal Productivity Style recommends the best genre of music to listen to is a laid-back beat or lo-fi beat to help clear the mind.
